Alexa Grasso eyes ‘perfect match’ with Paige VanZant, down to fight at either strawweight or flyweight
The UFC contender and staple of the women’s flyweight and strawweight divisions has been on the shelf since submitting Rachael Ostovich at UFC Brooklyn back in January. VanZant, who’s been looking for a fight for quite some time, recently tagged several fighters in an Instagram post asking the UFC to book her a fight.
One of the fighters on the list was Mexico’s Grasso and the Guadalajara native is more than willing to square off with VanZant.
“I would love to fight her and I think that’s a fight where both of us match-up really well, we can get the best out of each other.” Grasso told MMA Fighting. “She’s a good striker and has improved a lot. She’s also dangerous too, she had that switch kick knockout [over Bec Rawlings].
Part of VanZant’s recent callout was her interest in competing at either flyweight where she’s been fighting since 2018 or strawweight where she began her UFC career and built her name in MMA.
Either division suits Grasso as she’s recently shown interest in trying out 125 pounds after her controversial Fight of the Night bout with former strawweight champ Carla Esparza in the co-main event of UFC Mexico back in September.
“If I get a good fight at 125 pounds with a girl that’s ranked or [VanZant], of course I would take it,” Grasso explained.
“I’m naturally 125 pounds so I think it would be incredible to get the opportunity to try it. I hope and wish with all my heart that I get this fight, whether it’s at 125 or 115 pounds. I think it would be incredible and I would take it in whatever weight-class she chooses.”
Grasso believes the VanZant match-up is the fight to make.
They’re both promising contenders in their mid 20s and she believes she can bring star-power and attention to the bout. Grasso is one of Mexico’s most promising fighters and has served as a co-headliner for the UFC in four different occasions in her three-year career with the company.
“Yeah. I think this is the perfect match,” Grasso said. “Whenever they schedule it, I’ll be ready. I’ve been training and getting ready. I think she represents the United States well and I’m here in Mexico, so I think that would be an excellent fight for both of us.
“I think it would be a fight everyone would want to watch. In Mexico, everybody knows me and everybody knows her too. In the U.S, everybody knows her and I’m starting get a big fan base there that supports me, so I think people would like this fight. Many fans like my fighting style – always moving forward with my boxing and my jiu-jitsu has improved a lot. I think it would be an interesting match-up and believe me, it would be an entertaining fight.”
